Douglas Shepardson, owner of Sweet Treats on the Wharf, corresponded with his father-in-law to come up with the perfect business to open on the harbor front. After settling on a seasonal ice cream parlor, the shop opened in May of 1994, one week before Harborfest. This is an annual festival that celebrates Port Washington’s Nautical Heritage and aims to increase public awareness of our need to protect and preserve the precious waterfront. Fun fact, the first week the shop was open, ice cream was FREE! If that’s not the coolest thing I’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is. Shepardson’s personal favorite flavors are cookies and cream, brownie, and pralines and cream.
He knew nothing about the business prior to opening but always loved ice cream and people, and decided to give it a go. He makes super-premium ice cream in what is known as a French Pot style vertical gelato machine. It uses a slow churn process, adds little air, creating a super-dense dessert.
Many local kids get their first exposure to the business world through their first job at this shop.
