The first annual Long Island Ice Cream Tour was a large success. In attendance was Jeff, myself, Anna, Seth, Lori, and Gramz. Anna, Jeff, Seth, and I set out at 0600 hours to get some breakfast. We decided on bagels (a Long Island staple) in Sayville, then headed up to McNulty’s in Miller Place.

[10:45 a.m.] McNulty’s Ice Cream Parlor Yelp Foursquare

We arrived at McNulty’s before it opened (11 a.m.). Therefore, we were the first customers in the store. It’s a family-owned ice cream parlour that makes their own ice cream. There’s a vast selection of candies and gummies you may add to your choice of ice cream. They also bake themed (Disney, birthday, princesses, etc.) cakes.

Flavours we tried:
• Strawberry Macadamia
• Chocolate Almond

[11:48 a.m.] Port Jefferson Frigate Yelp Foursquare

Next, we headed over to the Frigate. This place has a nice 1950s style inside, they make their own shakes, and have a great selection of cookies and fine chocolate. However, we were sad to discover that their ice cream is not homemade. The ice cream we tried here was rather disappointing compared to the others we tried throughout the day — especially the Firecracker Blast (the Pop Rocks inside don’t pop due to the fact they’ve been surrounded by moisture for some time).

Flavours we tried:
• Firecracker Blast
• Coffee
• Cookies & Cream

[2:32 p.m.] Sweets of the Spoon Yelp Foursquare

We met up with Lori and Gramz at Sweets of the Spoon. Here, the shop is split in to two parts; the ice cream parlour and the cafe. Hence, we also grabbed lunch here. (C’mon, did you really think we’ve disrespect our bodies by eating only ice cream for the entire day?) They make their own ice cream, cupcakes, miniature houses (made from sugar cones, candies, and other sweets), paninis, wraps, salads, and more. It’s a great place to take the family on a day out.

Flavours we tried:
• Chocolate Truffle
• Emily’s Mom
• Berry Fudge

[4:11 p.m.] Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe Yelp Foursquare Foodspotting

This has been one of Jeff’s favourite ice cream shops for many years. It used to be a Carvel in the 1950s until Stew and his wife bought it from the owner and turned it in to what it is today. Stew invited us behind the counter to give us some history on the location along with a taste of some ice cream that had just completed the mixing process — it was a smooth, creamy texture; splendid.

Flavours we tried:
• Mint (before shock freezing)
• Peach

[7:33 p.m.] Hicksville Sweet Shop Yelp Foursquare

Although the Hicksville Sweet Shop looks like a regular old diner, you’ll be delighted to know that they make their own ice cream, and it’s tasty. It’s located less than five minutes (walking) from Hicksville Station.

Flavours we tried:
• Banana
• Cherry

[7:51 p.m.] Hildebrandt’s Restaurant Yelp Foursquare Foodspotting Facebook

Hildebrandt’s is similar to Hicksville Sweet Shop in the fact that it’s a classic diner-style restaurant which sells homemade ice cream at the front of the shop. Their ice cream is top notch. I just wish we could have sat down here and devoured bowls of it. Perhaps next year. 🙂

Flavours we tried:
• Banana
• Coffee
